A banda foi fundada por Steve Harwell e Kevin Coleman, que um tempo depois juntou-se com Greg Camp e Paul de Lisle. Em 1997 lançaram seu primeiro álbum, Fush Yu Mang, que estourou no top 20 norte-americano e levou disco de platina duplo. Depois em 1999, lançaram o álbum Astro Lounge, dos sucessos "All-Star", "Then the Morning Comes" e "Waste". "All-Star" na época já era Top 5 da Modern Rock da Billboard. Em 2001, foi o Smash Mouth que veio com tudo, mas com novo baterista, o Michael Urbano. O álbum teve ainda os sucessos "Pacific Coast Party" e "I´m a Believer". 2003 foi ano do Get In the Picture, do sucesso "You are my Number One" e depois disso a banda fez várias turnês pelos Estados Unidos. Em 2005, a banda voltou com o álbum de Natal The Gift of Rock. E em 2006 a banda tem três novos álbum: All Star Smash Hits (compilação das melhores canções), Summer Girl (que foi lançado em Setembro nos Estados Unidos e conta com "Summer Girl", "Story of my Life", entre outros). O último projeto de 2006, previsto para Dezembro, é o Old Habits, álbum virtual no qual as canções serão vendidas pela Internet. O estilo musical e influências de Smash Mouth, sempre foram assuntos de grande discussão entre seus fãs e admiradores. Muitas pessoas dizem que o Smash Mouth tem grandes influências de bandas pop dos anos 1950, 60. Como a banda já fez vários covers de músicas antigas, críticos de música dizem que Smash Mouth é uma banda atual que tem um pouco da boa música antiga. Get the Picture mostrou ser um álbum com muitas influências de surf e pop/rock, mas foi um álbum inovador, com muitas influências de Surf Music como Smash nunca tinha mostrado antes. New Planet tem novamente influência punk, Hot com um ritmo de heavy metal, mas Get the Picture? foi considerada pela banda o álbum com maior influências de Surf Music, com o jeito que Greg Camp tocou naquelas músicas parecidas com o estilo que Dick Dale tocava foi com realmente diferente.
