Em 1953, teve a primeira composição gravada por Zé Gonzaga o baião "Madalena", que fez muito sucesso no Nordeste. Por essa época, conheceu Luiz Vieira na Rádio Tupi, que gostou de seus versos e ajudou a desenvolver suas músicas, tendo convencido ainda a cantora Marlene a gravar o baião "Estrela miúda", parceria de João do Vale e Luiz Vieira. Como o dinheiro recebido pelas primeiras gravações chegava a 200 mil-réis contra os 5 mil-réis que ganhava como pedreiro, abandonou a construção civil e resolveu dedicar-se à carreira artística. Surgiram outras gravações de composições suas. Em 1954, participou como figurante do filme "Mão sangrenta", dirigido por Carlos Hugo Christensen. Nessa época fez amizade com o diretor Roberto Farias, para o qual faria posteriormente trilha sonora de alguns filmes, entre os quais "Mundo da lua", de 1958. Em 1955, Luiz Vieira gravou o baião "O lenço da moça", parceria dos dois. No ano seguinte, o mesmo Luiz Vieira gravou  o baião "Forró do Furtuoso", também de parceria dos dois. Em 1956, Dolores Duran gravou "Na asa do vento", parceria com Luiz Vieira, que seria regravada por Caetano Veloso em 1975 no LP "Jóia". Em 1957, Marlene gravou de sua parceria com Luiz Vieira o samba "Minha candeia". No mesmo ano, Ivon Curi gravou "Pisa na fulô", xote de parceria com Silveira Júnior e Ernesto Pires, que foi um dos discos mais vendidos da época. A mesma composição seria ainda gravada por Marinês e sua Gente e por Zé Gonzaga e seu Conjunto. Nesse período fez parceria não oficial com Luiz Gonzaga, pois pertenciam a editoras diferentes, e assim as composições da dupla,  "Sertanejo do Norte", "De Teresina a São Luís", "Pra onde tu vai, baião?" e "Fogo no Paraná", entre outras, apareceram como sendo parceria com Helena Gonzaga, esposa de Luiz Gonzaga. No mesmo ano, sua composição "Peba na pimenta", em parceria com José Batista e Adelino Rivera, integrou a trilha sonora do filme "Rico ri à toa", dirigido por Roberto Faria. Na ocasião, a música foi interpretada por Marinês, acompanhada de Abdias dos Oito Baixos. O filme foi estrelado por Zé Trindade e teve participações de atores como Silvinha Chiozo, Violeta Ferraz, Oswaldo Louzada e Zezé Macedo. No início dos anos 1960, a convite do compositor e sambista Zé Kéti, foi se apresentar no bar Zicartola, na Rua da Carioca, comandado pelo compositor da Mangueira, Cartola, e sua mulher, D. Zica, onde se reuniam compositores, que cantavam e apresentavam suas músicas. A convite de Sérgio Cabral, passou a se apresentar no Zicartola toda sexta-feira. Por essa época começou a surgir a idéia de fazer o show "Opinião". Recebeu convite de Oduvaldo Viana Filho, o Vianinha, para fazer a parte nordestina, com Zé Kéti comandando a parte de samba. A estréia do show aconteceu em 4 de dezembro de 1964, primeiramente com ele, Zé Keti e Nara Leão e posteriormente com Maria Bethânia, que eletrizou as platéias, interpretando "Carcará", maior sucesso da carreira de sua carreira e verdadeiro hino contra a ditadura militar da época. O show foi apresentado ao longo de 1965 e 1966. Em 1965 gravou o baião "Minha história", uma autobiografia. No mesmo ano lançou o LP "O poeta do povo", trazendo inúmeras composições já conhecidas e lançando outras como "Pra mim não", com Marília Bernardes, "O jangadeiro", com Dulce Nunes, "O bom filho à casa torna", com Eraldo Monteiro e Fogo no Paraná", com Luiz Gonzaga. Em 1966, estrelou ao lado de Nélson Cavaquinho e Moreira da Silva o show "A voz do povo". Em 1969, fez a trilha sonora do filme "Meu nome é Lampião", direção de Mizael Silveira. Ainda nos anos 1960 foi aos Estados Unidos a convite do professor Earl  W. Thomaz, para falar a professores de Português a respeito das expressões sertanejas que usava em suas músicas. Em 1970, Tim Maia gravou e fez bastante sucesso com "Coronel Antônio Bento", parceria com Luiz Vanderley. Em 1973, lançou com Paulinho Guimarães "Se eu tivesse o meu mundo". Em 1974 Gilberto Gil gravou no LP "Expresso 2222", a música "O canto da ema", numa interpretação marcante. Em 1975, participou de nova montagem do show "Opinião", com Zé Kéti e Marília Medalha, com direção de Bibi Ferreira. Em 1976 apresentou o show "E agora João?". Em 1978 passou a apresentar o "Forró forrado", que por dez anos marcou época na música popular brasileira. Entre 1979 e 1980, chegou a percorrer 40 cidades, realizando shows ao lado de Zé Ramalho. Ainda em 1980 participou ao lado de Chico Buarque e outros artistas, do Projeto Calunga, que realizou inúmeras apresentacões em Angola. Em 1981, Chico Buarque organizou o disco "João do Vale convida", com a participação de Nara Leão, Tom Jobim, Gonzaguinha e Zé Ramalho, entre outros, cujo lançamento ocorreu no Forró Forrado. No mesmo ano participou de excursão à Cuba. Em 1982, gravou disco ao lado de Chico Buarque. Em 1985 participou com Carlinhos Vergueiro do show inaugural do Projeto Pixinguinha, seis e meia na Sala Adoniran Barbosa em São Paulo. Em 1986 participou ao lado de Maria Bethânia, Zé Kéti, Suzana de Moraes e Marília Medalha no Teatro Carlos Gomes do espetáculo de rememoração da montagem do show "Opinião". Em 1991 gravou depoimento para o Museu da Imagem e do Som. Em 1992 foi homenageado com um show no Teatro da Praia Grande em São Luiz. Em 1994, Chico Buarque voltou a produzir disco de João do Vale, intitulado "João Batista do Vale", que recebeu no ano seguinte o Prêmio Sharp de Melhor Disco Regional. O disco contou com a aprtcipação de diversos artistas interpretando músicas de sua autoria, entre os quais o próprio Chico Buarque, que interpretou "Minha história", Fagner, "Na asa do vento", "Alceu Valença, "De Terezina a São Luiz" e Paulinho da Viola, "A voz do povo". No mesmo ano foi homenagedo pela Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro com amedalha Pedro Ernesto. Deixou mais de 300 composições gravadas por diversos artistas, entre os quais Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão, Maria Bethânia, Tim Maia, Ivon Curi e Alaíde Costa. Em 2000, Marcio Paschoal lançou pela Editora Lumiar o livro "Pisa na fulô, mas não maltrata o carcará", uma biografia   do artista. Em 2004, foi homenageado pela Prefeitura de Nova Iguaçu que criou o selo Nova Iguaçu Discos e produziu o CD "Carcarás da Cidade - Um tributo a João do Vale" no qual 15 composições do artista maranhense que morou por mais de 20 anos na cidade, foram interpretados por artistas locais, entre as quias, "Avisa minha nega", por Jairo Bráulio; "O canto da ema", por Ilton Manhães; "Uricuri (Segredo do sertanejo)", por Carine Mascarenhas; "Carcará", pelo Grupo Elemento e "Peba na pimenta", por Heitor Neguinho. Em 2006, por ocasião do décimo aniversário de sua morte, o compositor foi homenageado com o musical "João do Vale, o poeta do povo", apresentado em temporada no teatro Glauce Rocha, no Rio de Janeiro, com texto e direção de Maria Helena Kuhner. O espetáculo mostrou enredo baseado na biografia do compositor  escrita por Márcio Paschoal e contou com os atores Deuclideo Gouvêa, Rubens de Araújo e Marcê Porena. Após a temporada no Glauce Rocha, o espetáculo rumou para o Teatro Sesi, de Nova Iguaçu (RJ), cidade em que morou o compositor. Em seguida, teve duas apresentações especiais, em dias seguidos, no Teatro Baden Powel, em Copacabana, no Rio de Janeiro, com casa lotada. O sucesso do musical "João do Vale, o poeta do Povo" gerou a formação do grupo "Os Carcarás", que teve seu núcleo montado pelos músicos que nele tocaram, com especial dedicação a interpretação de obras do compositor maranhense. Na formação do grupo, os músicos: Marcos Aureh com: Voz, flautas, gaita, violão (6 e 12) e bandolim; Léo Rugero com: Violino, viola caipira, bandolim, violão e vocal;  Max Robert com: contrabaixo; Paulinho Baqueta com Pandeiro e triângulo e Cacau Amaral com: Zabumba, tambores, percussões e vocal. O grupo também conta com os cantores/atores Deuclides Gouvêa e Mercê Porena e, dirigido pela dramaturga e pesquisadora Maria Helena Künner, apresentou, em dezembro de 2006, o show conceitural, "Na Asa do Vento", em comemoração a mais um ano do nascimento de João do Vale,  mostrando o melhor do repertório do compositor, entre as quais, clássicos como "Carcará", "Pisa na fulô", "Cel Antônio Bento", "Na asa do vento" (que deu nome ao show) e "Canto da Ema", e mais outras quase desconhecidas, como "Passarinho", "Fogo do Paraná" e "O bom filho a casa volta". A banda, além da tradicional utilização do triângulo e da zabumba - acrescenta, em sua performance do espetáculo "Na asa do vento", variados instrumentos, como o violino, a flauta transversa, a flauta doce sopranino, o pífano, o violão de 12 e 6 cordas, a viola caipira, a gaita de boca, o bumbo leguero, o tambô de crioula e o pandeirão - toda essa gama sonora,  valorizada ainda mais pelos arranjos originais. A criativa música de João do Vale é vestida no show com uma nova roupagem, que trás características do movimento armorial nordestino com pinceladas de música de câmera. O musical, apresentado no Clube de Engenharia, situado à Avenida Rio Branco, no centro do Rio de Janeiro, teve roteiro, direção musical e arranjos, assinados por Marcos Aureh e contou apresentação do pesquisador Sérgio Cabral. Ainda em 2006, recebeu homenagem de seu conterrâneo Tião Carvalho, através do CD "Tião canta João", lançado pela Atração.
