O grupo formou-se na Inglaterra no final da década de 70, pela vocalista Chrissie Hynde, uma norte-americana que já havia participado dos grupos: Jack Rabbit, nos Estados Unidos e Gallie, na França. Os outros integrantes eram Pete Farndon (baixo) , James Honeyman-Scott (vocais, teclados, guitarra) e Martin Chambers (bateria). Depois dos compactos "Stop Your Sobbing" e "Kid" , fizeram uma turnê inglesa, recebendo alguma cobertura da imprensa. O compacto "Brass in Pocket" entrou para as paradas de sucesso de 1979, ano de lançamento do primeiro LP, que atingiu rápidamente o primeiro lugar dos mais vendidos. Participaram do concerto beneficente para os refugiados do Camboja (possuem três faixas no álbum Concerts for People of Kampuchea) e partiram para turnês na Europa e EUA, sendo muito bem recebidos por crítica e público. A revista Rolling Stone premiou os Pretenders como a grande revelação de 1980. Em 1982, morreu Honeyman-Scott, mas Chrissie Hynde anunciou que o conjunto não se acabaria, encontrando-se em atividade atualmente. Em 1987 "Where has Everybody Gone" foi usada como música tema da personagem Necros, assassino russo que enfrenta James Bond em The Living Daylights. Em 1993, o Pretenders perdeu vários integrantes da banda os quais foram contratados por Paul McCartney em sua mega turnê "Off The Ground", apresentando-se na América Latina. [Fonte: wikipedia]

The other members were Pete Farndon (bass), James Honeyman-Scott (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Martin Chambers (drums). After the singles "Stop Your Sobbing" and "Kid" did an English tour, getting some press coverage. The compact "Brass in Pocket" joined the 1979 charts, year of release of the first LP, which quickly reached number one bestseller. They participated in the benefit concert for Cambodian refugees (have three tracks on the album Concerts for People of Kampuchea) and departed for tours in Europe and the US, being very well received by critics and audiences. Rolling Stone awarded the Pretenders as the great revelation of 1980. In 1982, Honeyman-Scott died, but Chrissie Hynde announced that the group would not, being at present activity. In 1987 "Where Has Everybody Gone" was used as the theme song of Necros character, Russian killer facing James Bond in The Living Daylights. In 1993, the Pretenders lost several band members who were hired by Paul McCartney in his mega tour "Off The Ground", appearing in Latin America. [Source: wikipedia]
