Um dos maiores nomes do reggae brasileiro, a banda Cidade Negra surgiu, ainda nos anos 80, sob a alcunha de Lumiar. Após alguns shows e a mudança de nome, a banda formada por Da Gama (guitarra), Bino (baixo), Lazão (bateria) e Ras Bernardo (voz) assinou o primeiro contrato e estreou no mercado fonográfico em 1991, com o álbum “Lute Para Viver”. O ‘hit’ “Falar a Verdade” deixou-os bastante conhecidos no país e garantiu a gravação do segundo trabalho “Negro no Poder”. Em 1994 se iniciou uma nova fase para a banda, foi quando Toni Garrido entrou no lugar do vocalista Ras Bernardo, trazendo apenas benefícios ao som do grupo. “Sobre Todas as Forças”, fez com que a Cidade Negra se tornasse uma das bandas mais tocadas nas rádios, graças a sucessos como “Onde Você Mora?” e “A Sombra da Maldade”. A solidificação do sucesso do grupo veio com “O Erê”, o quarto trabalho do Cidade Negra, que vendeu 750 mil cópias. Os destaques do álbum foram “Firmamento” e “Simples Viagem”. Em 1998, a banda lançou “Quanto Mais Curtido, Melhor” que, puxado pela música “Sábado à Noite” foi um sucesso de vendas e de shows. Estabelecido em longas excursões pelo Brasil, o Cidade foi solidificando também uma presença regular por palcos da Europa. “Enquanto o Mundo Gira” foi o álbum lançado em 2000, no qual a banda inovou com ritmos e sonoridades inéditos para o grupo, mas ainda dentro do contexto político e social que envolve todos os trabalhos do Cidade Negra. Após 4 anos sem gravar nenhum material inédito, o grupo voltou em 2004 com “Perto de Deus”, que contou com a participação especial do jamaicano Anthony B na faixa-título.
