Foi após o regresso de uma estada de três anos em Barbados, que Des’ree soube, que no futuro, a música lhe estava destinada. Na altura, com catorze anos, estudava poesia e não tardou em começar também a escrevê-la, levando para a música uma mistura de experiências do dia-a-dia e de aspectos da sua cultura, que ainda hoje caracterizam as suas letras. Des’ree cresceu no sul de Londres e a apetência para a música foi-lhe transmitida pelos pais que, ao trocarem o sol das Caraíbas pelo nevoeiro londrino, trouxeram na bagagem os sons das ilhas, incutindo na filha o gosto pelos ritmos reggae, calypso e jazz, assim como pelo brit- pop. Em casa, Des’ree ouvia nomes como Duke Ellington, Bob Marley e Stevie Wonder, enquanto se imaginava uma Gladys Knight em cima do palco, a actuar para uma plateia reduzida, composta pela família e pelos amigos da cantora. Em 1994, as dimensões da plateia aumentaram consideravelmente com o sucesso alcançado pelo seu segundo álbum de originais, intitulado “I Ain’t Movin’”. Ao contrário de “Mind Adventures”, o seu álbum de estreia, editado dois anos antes, que passou completamente despercebido, “I Ain’t Movin’” tirou a cantora do anonimato e lançou-a nos Estados Unidos. Tal aconteceu graças ao êxito do single “You Gotta Be”, que se tornou no teledisco mais rodado no canal de televisão britânico VH1. Após um período de 80 semanas ainda figurava nas tabelas de “air-play” da Billboard. O tema foi igualmente responsável pelo alto volume de vendas de “I Ain’t Movin’” que, ao todo, vendeu mais de um milhão e seiscentas mil unidades por todo o mundo.
