Aos 16 anos de idade, começou a tocar violão. Dois anos depois, passou a integrar o grupo vocal Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD), com o qual se apresentava em clubes, praças, igrejas e palanques, cantando e tocando músicas dos Beatles. Em 1973, mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro, iniciando carreira profissional como crooner da casa noturna Number One. Nessa época, foi contratado pela Som Livre como intérprete de outros autores em trilhas de novelas da TV Globo. Durante três anos, gravou músicas para "Os ossos do barão", "Super Manoela", "Fogo sobre terra" e "Gabriela". Atuou também como crooner da boate 706 (RJ). Em 1975, participou do "Festival Abertura" (TV Globo), classificando sua canção "Fato consumado" em 2º lugar. Gravou, em seguida, seu primeiro disco, um compacto duplo contendo as canções "E que Deus ajude", "Um dia", "Rei do mar" e "Fato consumado", todas de sua autoria. No ano seguinte, gravou seu primeiro LP, "A voz, o violão e a arte de Djavan", com produção de Aloysio de Oliveira e arranjos de Edson Frederico. O disco incluiu suas canções "Pára-raio", "Maria das Mercedes" e "Flor de liz", grande sucesso até hoje em seus shows. Apresentou-se novamente no 706, dessa vez como atração, fazendo temporada de sucesso durante três meses. Djavan combina tradicionais ritmos sul-americanos com música popular dos Estados Unidos, Europa e África. Entre seus sucessos musicais destacam-se, "Seduzir", "Flor de Lís", "Lilás", "Pétala", "Se…", "Eu te Devoro", "Açaí", "Segredo", "A Ilha", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Oceano", "Esquinas" e "Boa Noite".. Em 2013, foi indicado ao Prêmio da Música Brasileira, na categoria Melhor Cantor/MPB, pelo CD “Rua dos amores”, e na categoria Melhor Canção, por “Vive”, incluída em seu CD “Rua dos amores”. Nesse mesmo ano, apresentou-se no Vivo Rio (RJ), com o show “Rua dos Amores”. Ainda em 2013, recebeu indicação à 14ª edição do Grammy Latino, na categoria Melhor Canção Brasileira, pela música “Bangalô". Donna Summer, foi uma cantora pop norte-americana mais conhecida por suas gravações em estilo disco dos anos 70, que deram a ela o título de Rainha da Disco.
