Baiana de Salvador, foi incentivada a ser cantora pelo pai, que gostava de música. Na adolescência tocava um pouco de violão e cantava em festas. Conheceu Caetano Veloso e sua irmã Maria Bethânia em 1963, e com eles, Gilberto Gil e Tom Zé montou o espetáculo musical "Nós, por Exemplo", em 1964. No ano seguinte o grupo foi para São Paulo, onde, sempre ligados, cada um seguiu sua carreira solo. Gal gravou o primeiro compacto em 1965, com "Eu Vim da Bahia" (Gilberto Gil) e "Sim, Foi Você" (Caetano Veloso). Participou do I Festival Internacional da Canção em 1966, ano em que seu empresário Guilherme Araújo a convenceu a adotar o nome artístico Gal, e não mais Maria da Graça. Gravou o LP "Domingo" com Caetano em 1967, participou do movimento tropicalista e explodiu nacionalmente como cantora em 1968, quando sua interpretação de "Divino Maravilhoso" (Caetano/ Gil) ganhou o terceiro lugar no IV Festival de Música Popular Brasileira da Record. Além disso, "Baby", composta por Caetano especialmente para Gal, tornou-se muito popular. Em 1969, com a ida de Caetano e Gil para o exílio na Inglaterra, ligou-se também a outros compositores como Macalé, e lançou o LP "Gal". Ainda muito associada à música e ao público de Caetano e Gil durante os anos 70, em 1979 o disco "Gal Tropical" inaugura uma nova fase em sua carreira, mais popular e comercial, para um público mais amadurecido. Passou pela década de 80 como absoluta no rol das estrelas de primeira grandeza da música popular brasileira, chegando a ser considerada por alguns como a maior cantora do Brasil. Com repertório eclético, gravou Jorge Ben Jor, Cole Porter e compositores então iniciantes, como Carlinhos Brown. Outra virada em sua carreira foi em 1994, com o CD "O Sorriso do Gato de Alice", menos pelo disco e mais pelo show de lançamento, que, dirigido por Gerald Thomas, mudou radicalmente o estilo das apresentações de Gal, e foi bastante criticado. No ano seguinte Gal desistiu de experimentalismo e lançou "Mina D'Água do Meu Canto" (dedicado ao repertório de Chico Buarque e Caetano Veloso) com um show convencional. Na década de 90 continuou se consagrando como uma das cantoras mais vendidas do Brasil. Em seus mais de 35 anos de carreira, Gal Costa foi intérprete de grandes sucessos como "Vapor Barato" (Jards Macalé/ Waly Salomão), "Meu Nome É Gal" (Roberto/ Erasmo Carlos), "London London" (Caetano), "Deixa Sangrar" (Caetano), "Folhetim" (Chico Buarque), "Balancê" (J. de Barro/ A. Bahia Salvador, was encouraged to become a singer by his father, who loved music. In adolescence played a little guitar and sing at parties. FILÓ MACHADO - Em 1980, sua composição "Jogral", parceria com Djavan e José Neto, foi incluída no disco "Seduzir", de Djavan. Em 1984, gravou o LP "Canto fatal", no qual incluiu várias composições de sua autoria: "Vice-versa" (c/ Sergio Natureza); "Cavalo do cão" (c/ Cacaso); "Boca de dendê" (c/ Aldir Blanc); "Perfume de cebola" (c/ Cacaso); "Poesia no sangue" (c/ Judith de Souza); "Desejo, desejado" (c/ Zé Maurício); "Buraco" (c/ Fátima Guedes) e "Arco-íris da paz", em parceria com Judith de Souza e Jane Duboc, que também fez uma participação especial nessa faixa. Em 1993, já radicado na França, lançou para esse mercado o CD "Oxala pere", no qual incluiu, entre outras, "Pause" (c/ Luciana de Garammont), "Menino de ouro" (c/ Judith de Souza), "Poeta diferente" (c/ Francisco Blanco). Ainda nesse disco, interpretou "Odira-e", de autoria de Celso Machado e Márcia Gatto, e "Ao amigo Filó", composição de Hermeto Pascoal feita em sua homenagem, além da regravação de "Jogral". Como instrumentista, trabalhou com Michel Legrand. Em 2001, lançou, pela gravadora paulista Lua Discos, o CD "Porto seguro". No ano seguinte, lançou o disco "Milagre da canção". Em 2003, a cantora Elizah interpretou "Brasil diarista", parceria de ambos. Nesse ano, apresentou-se no Mistura Fina (RJ), com show de lançamento do disco "Cantando samba".
