A banda teve início em maio de 1998, quando Zakk Wylde chama o baterista Phil Ondich recomendado por seu amigo Nick Catanese para tocar com ele em um concerto solo na Itália, Zakk e Phil decidiram chamar a banda de "" (bairro de periferia de Nova York) e o seu primeiro álbum de "Sonic Brewery". Entretanto, por não conseguirem uma marca registrada para "Hell's Kitchen", o nome da banda foi trocado por Black Label Society, e o nome do primeiro álbum mudado para "". Após o lançamento do segundo álbum da banda, (2000), DeServio decide deixar a banda para ir atrás de outros objetivos pessoais e a vaga foi preenchida por Steve "S.O.B." Gibb, filho de Berry Gibb dos BeeGees. Phil passou por alguns problemas de saúde, o que interferia negativamente nos shows da banda, e foi então substituído por Craig Nunenmacher (Crowbar, banda em turnê com o BLS). Em julho de 2000, Craig grava seu álbum de estréia no Black Label Society: Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live. Black Label Society is a band of Heavy / Sludge / Southern Metal raised in Los Angeles, USA by Zakk Wylde, former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. The band began in May 1998 when Zakk Wylde calls the drummer Phil Ondich recommended by his friend Nick Catanese to play with him in a solo concert in Italy, Zakk and Phil decided to call the band "Hell's Kitchen" (low income suburb New York) and his first album "Sonic Brewery". However, for failing a trademark for "Hell's Kitchen", the band's name was changed to Black Label Society, and the name of the first album changed to "Sonic Brew". After the release of the second album, Stronger Than Death (2000), DeServio decides to leave the band to pursue other personal goals and the vacancy was filled by Steve "SOB" Gibb, son of Berry Gibb of the BeeGees. Phil has had some health problems, which interfered negatively in the shows of the band, and was replaced by Craig Nunenmacher (Crowbar, band touring with BLS). In July 2000, Craig recorded his debut album in Black Label Society: alcohol fueled brewtality Live. Steve Gibb was temporarily replaced by Mike Inez of Alice in Chains during the tour of Ozzfest 2001. Robert Trujillo took the low-band lines in 2002, releasing the album that originally would be called "Deathcore Warmachine Eternal", however, due to events of September 11, 2001 the CD was released under another name, "1919 Eternal", on 5 March 2002. In 2003, Trujillo joined Metallica, leaving open the bassist spot in Black Label Society, which gave space for Inez back the band for a short tour of two weeks, with the album The Blessed Hellride, which contains a song with special guest Ozzy, entitled "Stillborn". James Lomenzo joined the band in 2004, participating in the recording of some tracks on the album Hangover Music Vol. VI, the last band released by Spitfire Records. In 2005, after signing with Artemis Records, the Mafia was released. After the album's release, Lomenzo returned to Megadeth and was replaced by original bassist John DeServio.
