O R.E.M. foi uma banda estadunidense de rock (de Athens, Geórgia) formada em 1980. Seu nome é uma referência ao estágio de sono REM (Em inglês, Rapid Eye Movement, Movimento Rápido dos Olhos) no qual ocorrem os sonhos mais vividos. Em 1979, Michael Stipe (vocalista), estudante de artes, conhece Peter Buck (guitarra), um jovem que trabalhava numa loja de discos. Tornaram-se muito amigos e passaram a dividir um apartamento. Em uma das festas que freqüentavam conheceram os também amigos Mike Mills (baixo) e Bill Berry (bateria). A afinidade entre os quatro foi imediata e logo começaram a tocar juntos.No dia 5 de abril de 1980, a banda fez seu primeiro show para a festa de aniversário de um amigo, numa igreja abandonada na cidade de Athens, no estado da Georgia, EUA, onde Stipe e Buck moravam. A partir daí, começaram a tocar em bares, restaurantes e festas no sudeste dos EUA. No ano de 1981, o R.E.M. lançou pelo selo independente Hibtone os singles “Radio Free Europe” e “Sitting Still”. Em 1982, o R.E.M. assina contrato com o selo I.R.S., onde lançam o EP Chronic Town, que teve uma ótima aceitação pelas rádios universitárias da época. Um ano depois sai o primeiro álbum do R.E.M., Murmur, que ganhou o status de álbum do ano batendo bandas já consagradas como U2, que tinha lançado o álbum War e também Michael Jackson com Thriller, o disco mais vendido da história. A aceitação do R.E.M. foi tão grande, que pela primeira vez fizeram um show fora dos EUA. Entusiasmados com o sucesso do primeiro álbum, em 1984, com apenas onze dias de estúdio, eles gravam o segundo, Reckoning, e saem em turnê novamente. 1985 é o ano de lançamento de Fables Of The Reconstruction, o terceiro álbum e o maior sucesso até então, com destaque para a música “Feeling Gravity´s Pull”. No entanto, durante a produção desse disco, a banda quase acabou devido a divergências internas e a discussões sobre o tipo de som que o álbum teria. Em 1986, o R.E.M. lança o quarto disco, Life’s Rich Pageant, outro grande sucesso alternativo. A banda conseguiu seu primeiro disco de ouro e o hit “Fall On Me” figurou no Top 10 dos EUA, fato inédito para o grupo. No ano seguinte, a I.R.S. lança um álbum intitulado de Dead Letter Office contendo Lados B e as faixas do Chronic Town. No mesmo ano a banda lança seu quinto álbum de trabalho, Document, com sons barulhentos e letras politicamente corretas. A música “The One I Love” leva o R.E.M. ao estrelato, figura no TOP 5 dos EUA e o álbum leva disco de platina. Dois anos se passam e em 1988 ocorrem vários fatos que marcaram a banda, sendo três de muita importância: o lançamento do álbum Green, o sexto da carreira, com hits como “Stand” e “Pop Song 89”; o R.E.M. é eleito pela revista Rolling Stone a melhor banda de Rock and roll dos Estados Unidos e eles assinam contrato com a milionária gravadora Warner Bros… A Green World Tour (Turnê do álbum Green) dura onze meses. Após três anos sem lançar nada e, principalmente, sem a pressão da gravadora, o quarteto lança o sétimo álbum, Out Of Time, o mais bem sucedido da carreira do grupo. Os hits “Losing My Religion” e “Shiny Happy People”, deram a banda três Grammy Awards e seis MTV Video Music Awards. Neste mesmo ano de 1991, a convite da MTV a banda gravou um Acústico, com várias músicas de sucesso e outras desconhecidas até então. Esse acústico não chegou a ser lançado em álbum mas mostrou a versatilidade dos músicos. Ficou provado, definitivamente, que eles eram excelentes músicos. Para muitos no Brasil era a primeira vez em que se ouvia falar no R.E.M. (fora do circuito underground) e o sucesso da banda foi uma das primeiras revitalizações do rock nos anos 90, antes da revolução de Seattle. Em 1992 a crítica duvidava que a banda iria conseguir manter a qualidade das músicas nos álbuns seguintes até que o oitavo álbum, Automatic For The People, foi lançado. O disco possui hits consagrados como “Man On The Moon” (dedicado ao humorista Andy Kauffman), “Everybody Hurts”, (para muitos a cancao mais triste do mundo),“Drive”, “Find The River”, entre outros. Em 1996, o R.E.M. renova com a Warner Bros. por US$ 80 milhões, um dos maiores contratos da indústria fonográfica. Lançam seu décimo álbum, que pela primeira vez não foi gravado inteiramente em estúdio. New adventures in Hi-Fi contém, em sua maior parte, músicas inéditas gravadas em passagens de sons da turnê anterior. Destaques para “Leave”, “E-bow The Letter” e “The Wake-Up Bomp”. Em 2001, depois que a ferida aberta pela saída de Berry já estava cicatrizada, o R.E.M. lança seu décimo segundo álbum, intitulado Reveal. O álbum possui belos arranjos de teclados eletrônicos com letras inspiradíssimas, reforçando o talento de Stipe, considerado um dos melhores letristas de sua geração. O primeiro single e grande hit do álbum é “Imitation Of Life”, onde o R.E.M. faz uma volta ao passado e recorda um pouco a onda pop vivida em 1991 com “Shine Happy People”. Outros destaques ficam por conta de “The Lifting”, “All The Way To Reno”, “She Just Wants To Be” e “I´ll Take The Rain”, onde eles continuaram mostrando que são mestres na arte de vídeo-clips. Em 2008 a banda lança seu ultimo album até então, Acellerate. Além de resgatar elementos classicos da banda, traz elementos marcantes de um rock mais “pesado”, com presença marcante da guitarra e bateria, além do ótimo acompanhamento no contra-baixo. Em especial, as músicas Supernatural Superserious e Accelerate marcam presença, entrando em algumas paradas musicais ao redor do globo. Em 2011 lançam “Collapse Into Now”, com músicas de intensidade bastante parecida com o trabalho anterior.
