The Strokes é uma banda de indie rock formada em 1998 em Nova Iorque, Estados Unidos. Eles alcançaram grande notoriedade nos primeiros anos da década de 2000 como líderes do movimento de garage rock revival. Os membros da banda são Julian Casablancas (vocais), Nick Valensi (guitarra), Albert Hammond, Jr. (guitarra), Nikolai Fraiture (baixo) e Fabrizio Moretti (bateria e percussão). Nikolai Fraiture e Julian Casablancas são amigos desde a infância. O guitarrista Nick Valensi e o baterista Fabrizio Moretti começaram a tocar juntos quando ambos estudavam na Escola Dwight em Manhattan. Mais tarde, Casablancas foi mandado para Le Rosey, uma escola na Suíça com intuito de melhorar seu comportamento. Lá, conheceu Albert Hammond Jr., ambos americanos. Coincidentemente, ambos viviam em apartamentos na mesma rua, um de frente para o outro. Albert e Julian passaram a dividir um apartamento e, em 1999, juntaram-se a Nikolai Fraiture, Nick Valensi e Fabrizio Moretti e formaram a banda The Strokes. A popularidade do grupo cresceu rapidamente, especialmente na região de Lower East Side em Manhattan. Começaram então a se apresentar no Mercury Lounge, onde Ryan Gentles era um dos agendadores de concerto. Gentles ficou tão impressionado pela banda que passou a ser seu produtor. O grupo passou a se dedicar a ensaios, mantendo seus trabalhos de dia resultando numa lista de dez a doze canções, entre elas Last Nite, Modern Age, This Life (atualmente chamada de Trying Your Luck), NY City Cops, Soma, Someday, entre outras. Posteriormente, a maioria dessas canções receberam novas letras. Primeiro disco da banda, Is This It é uma das referências do rock de garagem do início da década de 2000. A faixa NY City Cops não fez parte do álbum lançado nos Estados Unidos por conta dos ataques de 11 de Setembro de 2001. Posteriormente, Slash {ex-Guns N’ Roses, atual Velvet Revolver) tocou a canção com a banda. A relação com o Guns continuou no vídeo musical de Someday, que mostra rapidamente Duff McKagan, Slash e Matt Sorum. Em novembro de 2009 Is This It foi eleito o melhor disco da década de 2000 segundo a revista NME. A banda lançou o seu segundo álbum, Room on Fire, em Outubro de 2003. Recebeu elogios porém foi menos bem sucedido, mesmo sendo ouro nos Estados Unidos, comercialmente falando. O terceiro álbum, First Impressions of Earth, foi lançado em Janeiro de 2006 . No Japão, foi ouro na primeira semana de lançamento. Foi também o álbum mais baixado durante duas semanas no iTunes. Nikolai Fraiture and Julian Casablancas are friends since childhood . Guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fabrizio Moretti started playing together when both were students at Dwight School in Manhattan . Later , Casablancas was sent to Le Rosey , a school in Switzerland with a view to improving their behavior . There he met Albert Hammond Jr. , both Americans. Coincidentally , both lived in apartments on the same street , one facing the other. Albert and Julian began to share an apartment , and in 1999 , they joined Nikolai Fraiture , Nick Valensi and Fabrizio Moretti and formed the band The Strokes . The group's popularity grew rapidly , especially on the Lower East Side in Manhattan . Then began performing at the Mercury Lounge , where Ryan Gentles was one of the schedulers concert. Gentles was so impressed by the band that became his producer. The group began to devote himself to tests, keeping their day jobs resulting in a list of ten to twelve songs , including Last Nite , Modern Age , This Life ( now called Trying Your Luck ) , NY City Cops , Soma , Someday among others. In November 2009 Is This It was voted the best album of the 2000s according to NME . The band released their second album Room on Fire in October 2003. Received rave reviews but was less successful , even as gold in the United States , commercially speaking . Their third album , First Impressions of Earth , was released in January 2006 . In Japan , went gold in its first week of release. It was also the most downloaded album for two weeks on iTunes .
