SONNY TERRY & BLIND BOY FULLER - Harmonica Blues

HARMONICA BLUES

SONNY TERRY - Saunders Terrell, better known as Sonny Terry, was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on October 24, 1911. His father, a farmer taught the first notes on the harmonica when he was still young. He lost his sight in one eye in an accident when he was five and another accident at eighteen would take almost complete vision of the other eye. This deficiency prevented him from performing the work on the farm, so he immediately went to the streets, armed with its harmonics, for a living. Terry developed his own style of playing, imitating trains and fox howling. Soon after the death of his father he met Blind Boy Fuller, one of Piedmont blues-style pioneers, and they started playing together. Terry recorded with him for the first time in 1937 by Vocalion Records. This partnership would end in 1941 with the death of Fuller, and he then immediately form a new partnership with Brownie McGhee now. This partnership would end in 1941 with the death of Fuller, and he then immediately form a new partnership with Brownie McGhee now.BLIND BOY FULLER - (born Fulton Allen) was an American blues guitarist and singer. He was one of the most popular recording the Piedmont Blues Artists with black Americans, a group that also included Blind Blake, Josh White and Buddy Moss. Fulton Allen was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, USA, the son of Calvin Allen and Mary Jane Walker. He was one of a family of 10 children, but after the death of his mother, he moved with his father to Rockingham. As a boy he learned to play guitar and also learned from older singers the field hollers (satirical songs in which reigns vocal and rhythmic polyphony and improvisation is very common), the country rags, traditional songs and blues areas popular poor and rural. He began to lose vision in his teens. According to the researcher Bruce Bastin "while he was living in Rockingham, he began to have problems with their eyes. In 1928, he was completely blind, and turned to any job he could find as a singer and artist, often playing on the streets. By studying the artists of blues country like Blind Blake and play "live" Gary Davis, Allen became a formidable guitarist. In Durham, playing around the tobacco warehouses, he began to have followers sites, which included guitarists Floyd Council and Richard Trice and the harmonica player Saunders Terrell, better known as Sonny Terry and artist / guitarist George Washington [source: wikipedia].
