Foi de Pernambuco para o Rio de Janeiro aos 15 anos escondido em um navio, e lá ficou trabalhando na construção civil. Tocava percussão desde criança e logo entrou em um bloco carnavalesco, onde um dos componentes o levou para a Rádio Clube do Brasil, em 1950. A partir daí passou a atuar como compositor, instrumentista e cantor, gravando seu primeiro compacto e 1969 e o primeiro LP seis anos depois. Inicialmente gravou cocos sem sucesso. Mas a partir da série Partido Alto Nota 10 começou a encontrar seu público. O repertório de seus discos passou a ser abastecido por autores anônimos (alguns usando codinomes para preservar a clandestinidade) e Bezerra notabilizou-se por um estilo "sambandido", precursor mesmo do "gangsta rap" norte-americano. Antes do hip hop brasileiro, ele passou a transmitir do outro lado da trincheira da guerra civil não declarada: "Malandragem Dá um Tempo", "Seqüestraram Minha Sogra", "Defunto Cagüete", "Bicho Feroz", "Overdose de Cocada", "Malandro Não Vacila", "Meu Pirão Primeiro", "Lugar Macabro", "Piranha", "Pai Véio 171", "Candidato Caô Caô". Em 1995 gravou pela Sony "Moreira da Silva, Bezerra da Silva e Dicró: Os Três Malandros In Concert", uma paródia ao show dos três tenores, Pavarotti, Domingo e Carreras. Novo Som é uma das mais conhecidas bandas desse segmento no Brasil. Originou-se no Rio de Janeiro, gravando seu primeiro álbum no ano de 1988. O nome “Novo som” foi escolhido pelos fundadores da banda por verem, na época a necessidade de um novo estilo na música cristã brasileira. Inicialmente, a banda contou com Alex Gonzaga, Lenilton, Geraldo Abdo, Mito, Natinho e Ney. Hoje apenas Alex, Mito e Geraldo integram a banda. Para completar a atual formação contam com a participação mais que especial de Joey Summer (guitarra e back vocal) desde 2001 e Charles Martins (baixo e back vocal) desde 2003, em substituição a Lenilton. Surgindo no fím da década de 1980, a banda Novo Som ainda assumiu um papel importante na modernização da música cristã no Brasil. Apesar de bandas como Vencedores por Cristo, Rebanhão, Banda Azul, Sinal de Alerta, Oficina G3 e Grupo Elo já terem rompido a grande barreira entre o cristianismo e os ritmos musicais como Rock, Pop, Samba, Reggae, Bossa Nova,dentre outros, muitos cristãos protestantes ainda não viam com bons olhos estes estilos. O Novo Som é uma das poucas bandas gospel que surgiram nas igrejas evangélicas no início dos anos 80 e mantiveram uma carreira sólida. A banda Novo Som conseguiu se estabelecer, e, conseqüentemente, acumular diversos prêmios. Apesar de manter o mesmo estilo original, novas concepções artísticas são incorporadas à musicalidade da banda, que já é internacional. Em novembro de 2002, o Novo Som fez o primeiro show fora do Brasil, em Lowell (Boston) e depois disso passou a realizar turnês por várias cidades dos EUA, que já acontecem desde 2003. A banda já esteve também em todos os estados brasileiros e em grandes casas de espetáculos, inclusive, em uma das maiores casas de shows da América Latina : Metropolitan, atual Citibank Hall. The name "New Sound" was chosen by the founders of the band because they see, at the time the need for a new style in the Brazilian Christian music. Initially, the band featured Alex Gonzaga, Lenilton, Geraldo Abdo, Myth, Natinho and Ney. Today only Alex, Myth and Geraldo part of the band. To complete the current lineup with the participation of more than special Joey Summer (guitar and vocals) since 2001 and Charles Martins (bass and vocals) since 2003, replacing Lenilton.
