The Potiguar musician, Esso Alencar, was one of those responsible for organizing the Potiguar Culture Forum, held in February 2011. His effort to unite the artistic class in favor of the culture of Rio Grande do Norte is notorious. But Esso, who was part of the band “Os Quatro” from Natal, from 1991 to 2001, and who later followed an individual career, also developed a musical work of respect, as can be seen in his second solo album “Alma de Poeta”, released in 2009. The album is the result of an ambitious project by the artist to combine his music with texts by ten potiguar poets. Poems by Civone Medeiros, Alex Nascimento, Iracema Macedo, among others are present. The bonus song “Nenhuma Exata Answer”, a partnership with Chico César from Paraíba, completes the 11 tracks. The work was only possible to be carried out through the Pixinguinha Project, via Funarte. Some people might frown on this story of mixing regional themes with modern elements, but Esso manages to bring together accordion and zabumba with guitar solos and electronic effects without making it boring. It is in this vein that the album begins with the first two tracks, “Caravana em Travessia” and “Farra Sertaneja”, where you can see a little of this mixture, which it is good to emphasize, it is not even the keynote of the record. If it is to identify an aspect that permeates a large part of the work, this aspect is the poetic construction of the compositions, especially because they are originally poems. The subjects dealt with in the lyrics extrapolate the sertaneja issues and also go through everyday issues. This does not fall into the simple declamation of texts, he finds the right spot to sing, and his peculiar voice ends up relating well to the compositions and arrangements in most of the songs. The album is mostly of calm songs and follows a smooth rhythm. Nice to listen to while sitting. Not that this is a negative thing. The tracks “Arremedo” (Iracema Macedo), “As Mulheres” (Franklin Mário) and “Nenhuma Exata Answer” (Chico César) express the high point of the album, but they do not captivate immediately on the first listen. On the album “Alma de Poeta” Esso did an important job of recording. He knew how to transform potiguar literature into music. He couldn't get every song right, but overall he managed not to sound repetitive or forced. The disc is not hermetic, nor of a regionalist nature. It is diversified in themes permeated by poetics and has a modern and quality instrumental.
