No ano seguinte, lançou o álbum "Al Green Gets Next to You". No ano seguinte, foi lançado "Your Heart's In Good Hands", primeiro álbum secular (não-religioso) de Green. Em 2000, Green publicou "Take Me to the River", um livro que examina sua carreira.
