Nascida diretamente do desejo de Henrique Teles (vocalista) de divulgar suas composições, a Maria Scombona foi povoada por amigos músicos de diversas vertentes da música. De velhos amigos do heavy metal - no qual Henrique teve suas primeiras experiências musicais - a músicos de mpb, forró e outros, a banda teve como integrantes, desde o princípio, na construção da sua sonoridade. Quem ouve o som de muito balanço da Maria Scombona de hoje, não imagina que permeando as letras e melodias do compositor transitaram diversas linhas estéticas com influências tão diversas, que vão dos aboios ao blues, do coco de embolada à soul music, do forró ao jazz. O som da Maria, então, tendo a linha mestra das composições de Henrique, já teve um contorno mais pesado em um tempo, mais regional em outro, e terminou chegando num formato em que tudo está presente numa expressão estética muito homogênea onde cabe tudo e a música em si é o centro do processo. 1992 é o ano de formação da banda. De imediato, tendo suas composições selecionadas para o Festival de Arte Alternativa da Cidade de Olinda, Henrique Teles (vocalista) convoca os amigos Marcus Vinícius, guitarrista da banda metaleira Hemisferius, o flautista Wandeley e mais dois percussionistas atuantes da música local, Ronnie e Peppy. Essa foi a formação inicial, claro com um perfil de muita influência do metal de um lado e regional do outro; e assim seguiu com esse perfil até 1997, com outras formações, mas sempre com guitarras pesadas.
