Ficou conhecido por ser o vocalista da banda inglesa The Smiths. Quando a banda terminou em 1987, Morrissey desenvolveu uma carreira solo bem sucedida e é um dos poucos artistas a ter músicas no Top 10 de Vendas de Discos do Reino Unido em três décadas diferentes. Seu primeiro disco solo, Viva Hate foi lançado em março de 1988, seis meses após a separação dos Smiths. Seu parceiro musical neste disco foi o produtor de sua ex-banda, Stephen Street, e teve a participação do guitarrista Vini Reilly, do Durutti Column. Os concertos de Morrissey ficaram célebres devido ao número incrível de pessoas que constantemente invadiam o palco para poderem tocar no seu herói. Várias vezes os seus shows tiveram que ser interrompidos por causa da quantidade de invasores presentes no palco que tentavam agarrar o cantor. Em 17 de outubro de 2013, a autobiografia de Morrissey, intitulado “Autobiografia”, foi publicada. The Morrissey concerts became famous due to the incredible number of people who constantly invaded the stage to be able to touch your hero. Several times their shows had to be stopped because of the amount of gifts invaders on stage trying to grab the singer. On 17 October 2013, the autobiography of Morrissey, entitled "Autobiography," was published. The launch of the book caused controversy because it was published by Penguin Classics, which hitherto only published literary classics of renowned authors.
