Formada em Birmingham, Inglaterra, em 1968, a banda Black Sabbath foi a pioneira em lançar as fundações do heavy metal que assaltou a música popular nos anos 1970 e 1980. A maneira diferente de tocar - som cru, pesado - com letras mais fortes - abordando temas místicos tornaram-se o modelo para inúmeros grupos que se seguiram. Seu álbum homônimo de 1970 continua sendo um dos mais inovativos e influentes da história do rock. O quarteto composto por Ozzy Osbourne (vocalista), Tony Iommi (guitarrista), Geezer Butler (baixista) e Bill Ward (baterista), inicialmente se chamou Polka Tulk e mais tarde Earth. Tomaram de assalto o circuito de pubs e clubes de sua cidade natal, com muita energia, blues e rock. Companheiros de escola e vizinhos em Birmingham, o grupo ganhou muitos seguidores na Inglaterra e em 1969 mudaram seu nome para Black Sabbath. O novo nome espelhava a imagem escura, pesada e mística da banda, seu gosto por temas sobrenaturais; além de ser o nome de um filme de terror e magia negra de mesmo nome, do qual o baixista Geezer Butler era grande fã. Ainda em 1969 entraram em estúdio para gravar o seu primeiro disco. A banda surgiu da união de integrantes da Blues Band, uma banda de blues, com integrantes da Alta Tensão, banda de heavy metal, tendo em sua formação original: João Bosco (baterista), Marcos Yallouz (baixista), Alex Batata (vocalista e gaitista) e Fábio Brum (guitarrista). Em janeiro de 1997, Fábio Brum muda-se para os Estados Unidos, e entra em seu lugar o guitarrista Fábio "Corvo" Terra. Seis meses depois, em junho de 1997, Alex Batata é assassinado enquanto protegia uma amiga de uma ex-namorada. Entram, então na banda, Rodrigo Tozzette na voz e guitarra e Gilson "Dedos de Borracha" Junior nos teclados, mudando a formação de quarteto para quinteto. Nesse período de readaptação, O Bando do Velho Jack começa a incluir várias incursões instrumentais caracterizando-se como uma banda de "Jam". Também produzem releituras para músicas regionais do Mato Grosso do Sul, transformando-as em rocks, como é o caso do clássico pantaneiro "Trem do Pantanal", que na versão original foi nacionalmente conhecida na voz de Almir Sater, outra influência, no ritmo de guarânia. Em 2000 Gilson Junior é substituído por Alex "Fralda" Cavalheri, que já entra gravando o segundo CD e desde então vem tomando conta dos habituais pianos, mas também incluindo Moogs, sintetizadores e outras sonoridades peculiares ao som da banda, como a a música "Nuvens" do segundo CD.
