Quando a vocalista Natalie Merchant deixou o 10,000 Maniacs, em 1993, a banda entrou em um período de crise que quase resultou em sua dissolução. Afinal, substituir a cantora era uma tarefa extremamente difícil, pois ela era o centro das atenções da banda. Apesar das dificuldades, o grupo decidiu seguir em frente, recebendo a adesão da vocalista Mary Ramsey, que já participara de vários trabalhos do 10,000 Maniacs tocando violino e viola (trata-se de um instrumento similar ao violino, com dimensões maiores). Sua estréia aconteceu no álbum Love Among The Ruins, lançado em 1997, que mostrou a banda em ótima forma, mantendo o mesmo estilo dos trabalhos anteriores e apresentando o sucesso “More Than This”, nova versão para um clássico do grupo Roxy Music. The Earth Pressed Flat, o mais recente CD do grupo, traz a mesma formação do trabalho anterior: Mary Ramsey, Steven Gustafson (baixo), John Lombardo (guitarra e violão), Robert Buck (guitarra e efeitos), Jerome Augustyniak (bateria, percussão e vocal) e Dennis Drew (piano, órgão e sintetizadores). Musicalmente, a banda manteve a mesma qualidade e sonoridade básica, mas com algumas surpresas. Uma composição que foge ao estilo habitual da banda é “Somebody’s Heaven”, que traz uma profusão de guitarras com uma boa dose de distorção e delay, que criam uma base sobre a qual se desenvolve a música, com referências ao psicodelismo. When the lead singer Natalie Merchant left 10,000 Maniacs in 1993, the band entered a period of crisis that nearly resulted in its dissolution. Bad Company foi uma banda inglesa de hard rock formada em 1973, com sucessos como "Shooting Star", "Bad Company", "Can't Get Enough", "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Ready for Love" e "Silver, Blue and Gold". Sua formação original foi composta por Paul Rodgers (vocal), Simon Kirke (bateria), Mick Ralphs (guitarra) e Boz Burrell (baixo). Seu último álbum foi Merchants of Cool (2002), uma compilação ao vivo, com os principais sucessos e mais duas canções novas gravadas em estúdio: "Saving Grace" e "Joe Fabulous". Seus integrantes originais tinham tocado anteriormente em outras bandas britânicas: Free, Mott The Hoople e King Crimson. A este segundo álbum seguiram-se Run with the Pack (1976), ainda com boas vendagens (3x Multi-Platinum pela RIAA), Burnin' Sky (1977) e Desolation Angels (1979), todos álbuns competentes. Depois do álbum de 1982, Rough Diamonds, o vocalista Paul Rodgers deixou a banda, e a mesma, ao que tudo indicava, estava destinada a se acabar. Rodgers passou a integrar a banda formada por Jimmy Page, ex-Led Zeppelin, denominada de The Firm. Não obstante, em 1986, a banda retornou com novo vocalista, Brian Howe, apresentando um trabalho completamente diferente daquele que a havia caracterizado até então. O disco Fame and Fortune, em nada se assemelha com o hard rock dos anos 1970, se aproximando muito mais da sonoridade do glam metal americano dos anos 1980, mas sem o figurino espalhafatoso que caracteriza os integrantes habituais deste estilo. Os trabalhos posteriores, até meados dos anos 1990, seguiram esta tendência, sendo que no competente álbum de 1990, chamado Holy Water, a banda conseguiu emplacar uma música de relativo sucesso comercial, a balada If You Needed Somebody. Este disco foi certificado como Platinum pela RIAA. A ele se seguiu o disco Here Comes Trouble (1992), que ainda conseguiu atingir o certificado Gold pela RIAA. Em 1995 a banda lança novo disco, Company of Strangers, com o novo vocalista, Robert Hart, no lugar de Brian Howe. Em 1997 a banda ainda lança um segundo disco com este vocalista, Stories Told & Untold, com regravações de antigos sucessos da banda e sete novas músicas. O disco é um fracasso comercial. Em 1998, Rodgers e Kirke discutem a possibilidade da banda voltar a sua formação original. His original training was composed by Paul Rodgers (vocals), Simon Kirke (drums), Mick Ralphs (guitar) and Boz Burrell (bass). His last album was Merchants of Cool (2002), a live compilation, with major hits and two new songs recorded in the studio: "Saving Grace" and "Joe Fabulous". Its original members had previously played in other British bands: Free, Mott The Hoople and King Crimson. This album was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was followed by the album Here Comes Trouble (1992), it still managed to achieve Gold certification by the RIAA. In 1995 the band released new album, Company of Strangers, with new singer, Robert Hart, in place of Brian Howe. In 1997 the band also releases a second album with this singer, Stories Told & Untold with remakes of old hits of the band and seven new songs. The disc is a commercial failure. In 1998, Rodgers and Kirke discuss the possibility of the band back to its original formation. Agostinho dos Santos (1932/1973) foi um cantor e compositor brasileiro. Natural de São Paulo, foi crooner de orquestra, trabalhou nas rádios América e Nacional. Em 1955, foi para o Rio de Janeiro cantar com Ângela Maria e Sílvia Teles na Rádio Mayrink Veiga e gravou, no ano seguinte, o LP "Uma Voz e seus Sucessos", com músicas de Tom Jobim e Dolores Duran. Foi intérprete no filme Orfeu do Carnaval, de Marcel Camus, com trilha sonora de Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes, que lhe rendeu dois grandes sucessos: "Manhã de Carnaval" e "A Felicidade". Nos anos 50 e 60 ganhou prêmios e atuou como compositor, além de cantor. Participou do Festival de Bossa Nova no Carnegie Hall, em Nova Iorque (1962) com o conjunto de Oscar Castro Neves. Teve uma rápida passagem pelo rock'n'roll nos anos 50, gravando "Até Logo, Jacaré", versão de Julio Nagib para "See You Later, Alligator", de Bill Halley & His Comets. Excursionou pela Europa e morreu em 1973, no trágico desastre aéreo do Voo Varig RG-820, nas imediações de Paris.
Agostinho dos Santos (1932/1973) was a Brazilian singer and songwriter. Born in São Paulo, he was an orchestra crooner, worked on América and Nacional radio stations. In 1955, he went to Rio de Janeiro to sing with Ângela Maria and Sílvia Teles on Rádio Mayrink Veiga and recorded, the following year, the LP "Uma Voz e seus Sucessos", with songs by Tom Jobim and Dolores Duran. He was an interpreter in the film Orfeu do Carnaval, by Marcel Camus, with a soundtrack by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, which earned him two great hits: "Manhã de Carnaval" and "A Felicidade". In the 50s and 60s he won awards and performed as a songwriter as well as a singer. He participated in the Bossa Nova Festival at Carnegie Hall, in New York (1962) with the ensemble of Oscar Castro Neves. He had a quick stint in rock'n'roll in the 1950s, recording "Até Logo, Jacaré", Julio Nagib's version of "See You Later, Alligator", by Bill Halley & His Comets. He toured Europe and died in 1973, in the tragic air disaster of Flight Varig RG-820, outside Paris.
